Study: How secure are the web pages of the German industry?

7,5% of companies have at least one critical vulnerability. Our scoring is based on the CVSS v3 definition. What is more, 30% of companies use software components with known security issues.
These are just some of the results of our analysis of more than 5.000 companies listed in German industry associations.

Crashtest Security, the leading German provider for web application security, aims to improve the cybersecurity in Germany and protect companies against attacks from the web. Our study can now be used to measure our progress towards this goal.

Publicly available information of company websites was analyzed. This information can be viewed - and possibly exploited - by all users. The analyzed attack vectors include SSL- and TLS-encryption, as well as a fingerprinting of used frameworks and a scan of open ports.

Who did we scan?

In total, we scanned more than 5.000 Websites of companies listed in German industry associations, operating in five sectors:

  • Automotive
  • Manufacturing
  • Chemicals
  • Aerospace
  • Synthetics

What are the results?

30% of companies use software components with security vulnerabilities

Our fingerprinting detected the name and version number of the used web server or framework for 52% of companies.
For 30% of companies, our comparison of the version with the CVE database showed security vulnerabilities for the used technology.
The affected companies should immediately patch to the latest version and hide the technology and version number from hackers.

50% of companies have more than 7 vulnerabilities

Only 97 out of more than 5000 companies could retain their clean slate and did not reveal any vulnerabilities during our tests for fingerprinting, encryption, and open ports.
Our study has more details, for example how many vulnerabilities the frontrunner has. Is it more than 25? Or even more than 35?

7,5% of companies have at least one critical vulnerability

Our study and our software use the categorization of vulnerabilities in accordance with CVSS v3 (Common Vulnerabilitiy Scoring System).
A critical vulnerability has a rating of 9.0 or more on the scale from 0 to 10. These security vulnerabilities should be dealt with immediately.

The average amount of vulnerabilities per company is 7,9

Next to the amount of vulnerabilities, the CVSS rating of the individual vulnerabilities has a significant impact, as i.e. the exploitation of a vulnerability may vary in complexity.
For most companies, we not only found a large number of vulnerabilities, but also a critical or high CVSS rating.
Our study contains more information regarding the most found vulnerabilities.

What are the implications for you?

In our study, we explain the potential implications of the most common vulnerabilities - and what you can do in your role to prevent those implications. In addition to more results per role (as shown below), our study contains 5 strategic actions on an organizational level that can prevent most of the discovered vulnerabilities.
